It’s a habit many of us have: using our smartphones in the bathroom. But Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a renowned gastroenterologist trained at prestigious Stanford and Harvard universities, warns of the risks of this practice.

May trigger discomfort
In a TikTok clip, Dr. Sethi revealed that sitting on the toilet for long periods can increase pressure on the rectum and anus. This can lead to uncomfortable symptoms such as hemorrhoids, anal fissures, and rectal prolapse.

In addition to this health risk, Dr. Sethi also emphasized the hygienic aspects. He pointed out that studies have shown that the average smartphone is often dirtier than a public toilet seat. Therefore, the specialist advises against using the cell phone while going to the toilet.

Dr. Sethi advises thoroughly cleaning the smartphone, particularly the display, with a disinfecting cloth for those still adamant about keeping their phone.
